I haven’t finished listening to this episode yet, but I just want to add my two cents and say that fanfiction opened my eyes in a lot of ways, but especially when it comes to sex, and I’m really grateful for that. I’m a young person living in a rural area, so I’ve only known a handful of people who aren’t straight, and all these issues that have to do with sexuality are things I would never have considered if it weren’t for this fan culture. I can look at people now without having to make assumptions about gender or sexuality; I hate to realize that I did before, but no one told me there was another way to think until fandom did. Fanfiction is really what did away with all those boxes—female, male, straight, gay—in my mind, and it continues to do so. So I kind of just want to say thank you to fanfic authors who put their work up where people like me can learn from it. (Also Tumblr. Tumblr is great.)
