Consulting Fans: Consultingpiskies, Finnagain, MK, and Saathi1013
- Rule 63 (as Saathi uses it – ymmv): an umbrella term for fanonically reinterpreting characters as gender(s) other than those presented in canon. This includes what some people call ‘cis-swapping’ as well as headcanoning a character as transgender, provided their gender identity — not assignation at birth — is different than that in canon. Also useful when one wants to be inclusive of nonbinary genders.

About 31 minutes in, there was a reference to a ship I couldn’t quite catch. The speaker mentioned the characters were in the same room for 30 seconds in season three, but otherwise never met. It sounded like “myshot”. Did anyone catch it?
Hey Ashirogi! They were talking about ‘Mystrade’ – the ship name for Mycroft & Greg Lestrade. It’s a prolific secondary ship in the Sherlock fandom, which is noted because they were never on screen together until a very, very short clip in S3. Hope this helps 🙂
Thanks for replying! It was a fascinating discussion, even with the unfamiliar acronyms buzzing overhead, and I’m thrilled it draws more people to the stories.
Enjoyed the podcast.
I almost started laughing when I realized that your panel was about shipping because I had just finished watching Not Literally production’s “I ship it” video moments before.

I am very curious about the up-coming special. Please keep us updated. I’m fine with spoilers but, I don’t think that you should change policies. I’ll find the spoiler casts.
The fem round table was interesting, I think that the major reason that we don’t have more canon character female / female slash is that there is so little shown of the women in the show. The Sherlock writers don’t seem to know how to write conversations between women. I never see female female conversation with more depth than, “Nice dress, Molly”. Also, Sherlock says more words in one minute than Anthea has said in the entire series!
Janine was a breath of fresh air, but despite being Mary’s best friend, I dare you to find one instance of them talking to each other onscreen.
Like the original Sherlock Holmes, the writers seem to have little interest in the lives of the women in the show. If one wrote a fanfic about Sally’s normal day, I doubt that she’d have much interaction with Sherlock or John or any of the women in the show for that matter. Other than a joke here or there about herbal soothers and cleaning floors women are of secondary importance to the whims of the self-centered leads of the show.
First, and important: Please don’t change the policies! I love the podcast, and I really dislike spoilers. I’ll listen to the Spoilercasts after the episodes air, but until then I really prefer to be as spoiler-free as possible.
I loved all the focus on smaller ships, and on multi-shipping! I would like to poke my head in and make a case for my major minor ship – Golly, or Mollystrade, or Meg, or whatever you want to call the Good Ship GregAndMolly.
Why I ship Greg with Molly –
1) Greg would be so damn good for her. He is her intellectual match – not someone she would always feel inadequate next to (like Sherlock), not someone who can’t keep up with her (like Tom), not someone who uses her (like both Sherlock and Jim did), but an equal. He is very much attracted to her, and would treasure and appreciate her for her strengths and be strong for her when she needed him to be. He can see past her shyness and awkwardness to the fierce, loving woman beneath.
2) Molly would be so damn good for him. She is loving and supportive, she understands his work and wouldn’t resent his irregular hours and his being basically on-call to Sherlock, because she’s in the same position. When Molly gives her heart, she is constant – unlike Greg’s ex-wife, which will be important for him as he moves on from that relationship. She’s got a morbid sense of humor, which police also have to have, but also a compassion for victims. She would love him fiercely but also not take any crap from him – and I think he’d appreciate that.
3) I feel like there’s real chemistry between the two of them on the show. I’m pretty sure this is going to become a canon ship, and for once I love the idea! The only bad thing IMO about it becoming canon is that it means Molly will come in for some hate from folks who ship Lestrade with others – because it’s always the woman who takes the hate when slash ships are broken in canon, isn’t it? *grumbles about internalized misogyny*
4) I can ship them and still ship Johnlock – though I do wish there were more Greg/Molly fics that focused on the two of them, rather than having them as a background pairing.
5) On a meta level – this fandom needs more het, dammit! I mean, I love slash as much as the next girl, don’t get me wrong – and I understand that the World Outside Fandom is almost exclusively het, so people come to fandom to get away from it, I get that, I really do – but sometimes I want to stay in fic-land and read about boys and girls together.
6) I *like* these two characters, and I want them to be happy, and I want them to be happy *together* and have really hot sex and maybe babies that they name after Sherlock and John and watch the kids grow up and see them become one of those cute old couples walking down the street holding hands – her hair still long and ponytailed, though mostly white, he with a cane but still with that cop’s gleam in his eye and…
Aww geeze. Now thinking about that I want a Greg/Molly retirement-age (or at least empty-nest age) fic!
To sum up: This ship is awesome because both characters are awesome and they would be awesome together, so you should ship them (or at least think seriously about doing so). Amen.
