JKR, Harry Potter, and Support for Our Trans Community

Three Patch Podcast stands in solidarity and support of our trans, non-binary, and queer staff members, volunteers, and listeners. We will continue to uplift trans, non-binary, and queer voices and celebrate the diversity of our fandom communities, fighting against hate and oppression.

We would like to acknowledge TPP’s roots in the Harry Potter fandom in order to move forward in a more conscious way, as well as making our stance clear to new and longtime listeners who might go back to older episodes.

We bring attention to not only the hurtful impact of JK Rowling’s words, but also the ongoing impact they will have in her home country, where the government is opting to constrain trans people’s access to legal recognition of their gender.

This statement and our actions are not just about working to keep our listeners safe, but also our commitment to our trans, non-binary, and queer fandom family whose struggle for safety and respect continues around the world.

Here are our plans for the podcast moving forward:

  • We have changed the name and format of our Sorting Segment for future episodes. In Pegging Sherlock, we branch out to new ways of analyzing and classifying our favorite BBC Sherlock characters!
  • We are adding content warnings and links to this statement to the shownotes of all past Sorting, Potterlock, and Harry Potter-related segments to allow our listeners the option to avoid these topics. We did discuss at length the possibility of removing all HP-related segments from our library, but ultimately decided to leave them and add content warnings in order to preserve these discussions (such as Sorting segments) which in the past have been integral to the content of the podcast.
  • Any future segments centered around these topics will be sensitive discussions and analyses with content warnings in the recording as well as shownotes.

We recently discussed some of these issues in our When The Author Isn’t Dead segment from Episode 102. There is also an extended cut and segment transcript.

Please join us in emphatic support of our trans community as we work to make Three Patch Podcast a more welcoming, enjoyable place for all.
